UnSpun

Mobile news lens (Android-first)

UnSpun helps users understand the news clearly and calmly without manipulation, while respecting the craft and livelihood of journalists. It’s intentionally not a pirate RSS reader and not a replacement for original reporting.

UnSpun acts as a signal-to-noise filter, a bias/manipulation detector, and a clarity-focused rewriter when needed—while always navigating users back to the original publisher.

Core capabilities

Scoring drives everything

Each story is scored along three dimensions:

  • Manipulation / clickbait — sensational language, emotional priming, fear-based framing, lack of sourcing, and omitted key facts.
  • Clarity / informational density — are the 5Ws present, is the lede buried, are quotes used responsibly, and does the headline match the content.
  • Journalistic craft — narrative flow, strong lede, clean transitions, balanced sourcing, and distinctive voice.

Rewrite policy

Enhance, don’t replace

Rewrite only when the story is manipulative, the headline is misleading, key facts are hidden, the tone is excessively emotional, or the article is bloated and repetitive.

Do not rewrite when the journalist’s craft is strong, the structure is already clean, the voice adds value, and the reporting is balanced and factual.

When a rewrite is warranted, UnSpun can produce a classic inverted-pyramid rewrite:

  • Paragraph 1: Who / what / when / where
  • Paragraph 2: How
  • Paragraph 3: Why
  • Paragraph 4+: Additional context, quotes, background

Publisher-friendly constraints

Hard rules

UnSpun must remain publisher-friendly:

  • Always link back to the original article.
  • Encourage users to read the full story.
  • Show the publisher’s name prominently.
  • Provide a “support this outlet” button.
  • Optionally show publisher favicon/branding for clear attribution.
  • Optionally offer a minimal-ad mode that still counts as a visit (without bypassing paywalls).

Avoid full-text scraping as a replacement experience, bypassing paywalls, replacing the article entirely, or blocking ads on the publisher’s site.
